A brief history of Udzungwa National Park

If driving along dusty roads is not your ideal safari experience, consider taking a visit to Udzungwa Mountains National Park (UMNP), one of Tanzania’s best parks for hiking enthusiasts. Established in 1992, UMNP is a popular lure for forest lovers, hikers of all skill levels, primate and botany enthusiasts. UMNP is the only national park in Tanzania that has eleven primate species, five of which are not found anywhere else in the world but UMNP, 250 species of birds, 400 species of butterflies, over 2500 species of indigenous trees and plants, and Tanzania’s largest waterfall, the Sanje waterfall, at 270 meters high. UMNP offers many activities to suit any of the visitor’s desires from bird and wildlife watching, camping, climbing to the highest peak in the park, an educational hike featuring the historical medicinal uses of the local flora to a refreshing afternoon dip in the pool at the base of Sanje Waterfall. A trip to UMNP is not one that will be easily forgotten.

*Note: The interior of UMNP is not accessible by car; walking and hiking safaris are the only way to experience the flora and fauna of the park.

Best time to visit Udzungwa National Park

Visitor’s can enjoy UMNP year-round however the best time to visit is between June and October. Sanje has the most water volume in the rainy season, between January and April and it’s least in the November and December months. Be prepared for rain at any time!

How to get to Udzungwa National Park

  • By road: The closest city to UMNP is Mikumi, west of Dar es Salaam. UMNP is located in Mang’ula village 60 km south of Mikumi. The park can be accessed by private car or bus from Mikumi. Many bus companies also go directly to UMNP from Dar es Salaam and it easy to get connections from Mikumi if you are coming from any other area of Tanzania.
  • By train: The TAZARA train stops in Mang’ula village on its route from Dar es Salaam to Mbeya.
  • By air: A charter flight must be booked from Dar es Salaam. Chartered flights land at Msolwa or Kilombero Sugar Company airstrips.
