Ruaha National Park

A Brief History of Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park, established in 1964, is located in the Southern Highlands region of Tanzania. It’s untouched, unique and remote landscape offers an exceptional safari experience for the visitor who wants an “off the beaten path” safari experience. Safari guests will enjoy a diverse landscape comprised of forests full of acacias, baobabs and sausage trees, grassy plains, river ecosystems (including the famed Great Ruaha River), rocky outcrops mountains and valleys, all teeming with a plethora of the continent of Africa’s best flora and fauna. Ruaha is the best and only place in Tanzania to see the majestic and rare Greater Kudu as well as the endangered African Wild Dog. Another unique aspect of Ruaha is that it is the transitional point of two overlapping vegetation zones, the Zambezian from southeastern Africa and Sudanian from Northeastern Africa.

Best Time to Visit Ruaha National Park

Visitors will be able to enjoy the grandeurs of Ruaha National Park all year around.

The rainy season during the months of November through April affords the best opportunities for viewing many of Ruaha’s 571 distinctive bird species and the park’s 1650 documented plant and wildflower species for those visitors who are botany enthusiasts.

The dry season during the months of May through September afford the best opportunities for viewing big game such as elephants, kudu, lion, buffalo, giraffe hippos and crocodiles. With luck you may also see the smaller game such as the jackal, dik dik and rock hyrax among the many other species that call Ruaha home!
